The Kit

Technically advanced, electronically sophisticated, robust, reassuringly protective, eye-catching, definitely sexy, nicely complicated and fairly expensive. Thankfully it is so well made that it lasts for ages.
Safety regulations are now extremely stringent; from January 2006 kit will have to comply with new EU regulations.

BEGINNERS need a mask (with proper back strap), white full length jacket, glove for fencing hand, non-electric foil, substantial tracksuit trousers (without pockets that could catch a foil tip), and suitable trainers.

MASKS come in several sizes, steam/electric quality.

JACKETS are made from tough man made fibres. The strongest is rated at 800N and is obligatory for top level international competitions. The 350N is considered strong enough for domestic competitions and club use.

BODY PROTECTORS Girls need to wear breast protectors, either separate ones that fit into pouches in the jacket or an all-in-one worn under the jacket. Young or thin children of both sexes are well protected by the flat epee body guards which come in different sizes.

BREECHES are required for most competitions other than sometimes the youngest age groups.

KNEE LENGTH SOCKS, normally white, must be worn with breeches.

A PLASTRON goes under the jacket to provide extra protection on the dominant side, especially for the armpit. Compulsory for competitions and recommended for serious training.

FOIL HANDLES are either French grip or Pistol (Orthopaedic). They come in different sizes, left or right handed.

FOIL BLADES come in 3 lengths [UK] 0 for under 10s, 3 for under 14s and 5 for 14 plus

BLADE TYPES Non-electric [steam] - for beginners and non-electric fencing.
Electric - needed for all competitions and club fencing 'on the box'.

ELECTRIC JACKET or lame. Standard or Lightweight - less durable but more comfortable.

BAGS from small - for one foil and mask, to huge wheelies for taking everything you could possibly need to everywhere you might want to go!
